Chapter Nine

The next day, Jessica felt bad that she had tried to change Amanda. In fact, she was upset with both of her friends. They were the ones who had given her the idea of giving Amanda a makeover. Most of all, Jessica was upset that she could have potentially damaged any further relationship with her long-lost sister.

Jessica knew that she had to apologize, but didn’t know when Amanda would pass by. Lindsay and Britney were fixing their hair and makeup in front of their locker mirrors. Jessica normally did the same ritual as well, but not today.

“Jessica, is everything all right? We always freshen up our hair and make-up in between all of our classes,” Lindsay said, looking worryingly at her friend.

“No, I’m fine. I’m just looking for someone,” Jessica replied.

“Who? Tommy?” Britney asked while she applied more mascara to her eyelashes.

“No, someone else,” Jessica responded. Right at that moment, Amanda passed by on her way to the library.

“Hey Amanda!” Britney and Lindsay called out to her.

Amanda kept on walking by and the girls stared after her. She suddenly decided to turn back around and approached Jessica. “I’m sorry for yelling at you, Jessica,” Amanda stated and briskly walked away. Jessica was surprised that Amanda had apologized when she had wanted to do the same. Jessica opened her mouth to also apologize, but Amanda was already out of sight.

“She yelled at you?” Britney shockingly asked. No one had ever dared to yell at Jessica.

“How rude is that?” Lindsay chimed in.

“Who the hell does she think she is?” Britney added.

“Well, she did yell at me,” Jessica said. “But I can’t blame her. She could see right through us.”

“So, she’s not going through with the makeover?” Lindsay asked.

“No, I don’t think she really needed one. I think she’s beautiful the way she is,” Jessica said.

“Yeah, in a different lifetime,” Britney slipped.

“You know what, Britney, that’s it. I’m telling you this for the last time. If you want to hang out with me, then you better stop making fun of Amanda. Got it?” Jessica asked.

“Yeah, I got it,” Britney quietly said. “So, what are you guys doing for Thanksgiving? Anyone going out of town?” Britney tried to quickly change the subject.

“I’m going to the Bahamas during that week,” Lindsay stated.

“Jessica, do you want to hang out or are you going out of town as well?” Britney asked.

“Well, I’m not going out of town,” Jessica said. Britney smiled thinking she would be invited to hang out with Jessica. “However, I do have plans with my mom and Amanda during that week, but Britney you’re more than welcome to join us.”

Britney’s smile quickly faded, but she kept her composure and said, “Oh, no. That’s all right. I’ll probably hang out with my mom if she doesn’t have a lot of paperwork to do for her upcoming trial.” The bell rang and the three girls went their separate ways to class.

The first week of November consisted of preparations for the Sadie Hawkins dance. It is a traditionally Southern dance where the girls ask the guys out.
